I too have a JD 850 1984. I experience the same power steering problem. Easy to one side and hard to the other. What is the hydraulic controller? I also wanted to talk to you about the loader. Do you have 2wd? Are you pleased with its performance (lift)? My 3point also sinks very slowly days to sag all the way down. Do you know the capacity of out 3 point hitch (#'s)? Thanks

I have a John Deere 850 ps 2wd and would like to add a loader. Can I hang the finish mower on the rear 3pt for ballast, or am I just going to spin my wheels? My understanding is that 2wd tractors can't effectively use loaders.

What should a guy start a landscape business with? Tractor wise I need to be able to trailor it with a 1/2 ton truck. Need to buy a trailor also. I want to have a loader then a variety of attachments for 3pt hitch. What are going rates for the Midwest? Just a guy trying to make a buck or two.

Thanks for your help everyone. I finally had to take the gear box(mule drive) and tractor to my local dealer Steffen Equipment(small but very adequate and is great for parts). They dimantled the drive tourched the PTO shaft and sleeve and finally broke it loose. Long story short the gearbox was rebuilt and the PTO shaft on the tractor was replaced. The dealer I bought this from gave me a satisfaction guarantee (on a 1984 850JD) and delivered the unit over 130 miles. Mark Puriton of Barton county implement (www.bartoncountyimpl.com) in Lockwood and Lamar Missouri agreed to help me with the cost of the repairs. I'm a true JD person, but I feel it's your dealer (in my case dealers that make a difference.
